Let’s Look: Rail Wars Episode 7: Harem Hijinks and Super Tsundere Nation!

It took me a second but I’m back and with the original format. I know what I’m doing! I’m getting back to my roots and apparently so is the Squad 4!

So apparently after only seven episodes and about two or three months at the job, our semi-competent group is sent to the Karuizawa Training Instiute.

Note: How I can tell is because Naoto, Iwaizumi, Aoi, and Koumi stopped wearing their jackets. This is the equivalent of a Japanese high school switching to their summer uniforms around July. Add to the fact you can guess they started around April or March when school starts in Japan

Now they’re taking the Railway Public Safety Crew Advanced Education and Training this time around. Personally I like Karuizawa. It’s…refreshing. Yeah that’s a Ouran Host Club reference. I only watched the Funimation Dub recently.

So after hearing this, what does Aoi do?

Snapshot_1 Snapshot_2

That looked like some WWE type stuff. Are you sure she doesn’t lift?

Then this happens…

Snapshot_3 Snapshot_4

Then as if he wasn’t being held down by a hot woman with some unreal strength, Naoto pops up and he’s ready to go!

Then Iwaizumi ask if the food’s going to be good. He reminds me of this kid I took care during my last job. All that was on this kid’s mind was breakfast and lunch. He would have been thinking about dinner if I didn’t stay until two.

Snapshot_6

That’s all you need for the eternally hungry…

So Nana asks if Koumi wants to go…

Now that’s what we call the Freudian Slip. You mean to say one thing but you say what you mean instead. It’s typically for accidentally saying something sexual.

Getting passed that…

After the opening which is once again done by the beautiful Minori Chihara, we have the group on a train

What else? This is an anime about trains!

Note: Minori Chihara in the near future will have an art book of pictures to celebrate 10 years as a voice actress. Normally I don’t care about art books. I’m not even really serious about the SquareBeFair movement. Not because I don’t care. It just means more time and I put enough on my plate without having to lobby to the Japanese for a game I can’t play until I get a PS3. That being said this is definitely something I have to get in some way or fashion.

They’re going through the Usui Pass which is said to be one of the steepest rails in Japan. So of course Naoto is practically orgasming here.

Let’s look at everyone else.

Snapshot_9

Iwaizumi’s eating. That’s new…Koumi’s making sure that Naoto doesn’t fall off the train to his highly possible death. And what’s Aoi doing? Trying not to watch the idiots. See that’s why we love her and she’s voiced by Manami Numukura. That doesn’t hurt her hotness either.

Snapshot_10

As they walk in Iwaizumi says he’s hungry, nooooo! Dude you just ate about ten minutes ago max! You can’t be hungry!

So they met their trainer, Tetsuya Narita.

Snapshot_11

Looks like a big fella.

So after that we go to the training which starts off with some running which Koumi fails at. Looks like all that logic she tried to use in episode 6 why she should be a good runner bombed.

We flash over to after the training and the whole group’s sitting around in the dining hall until someone arrives to take their order.

Snapshot_12

Mari Sassho?

I know I’m known to be that guy that points out the fanservice but did Mari’s boobs get bigger? Just asking…

Anyway after Mari says how weird of an coincindence meeting them here is, Koumi immediately…immediately doesn’t really cover it. The girl scoots over to Naoto like Mari was trying to take her man! Come on Koumi. Mari’s got the lead without trying!

So with Mari and Koumi all up on him, Aoi says this.

Snapshot_13

Hmmm…what’s your response Naoto?

Snapshot_14

Oh!He just reversed it! So Aoi spills some hot tea on him for just the implication that she might be interested in him. Yeah Aoi. You’re not interested at all. The fact that Naoto had his hands all on your butt in episode 5 was nothing but pure friendship right? Or when you collasped inbetween Naoto’s legs after disarming the bomb? That was just all in good fun right?

Anyway they order lunch which Iwaizumi orders three servings of curry just for himself. The explanation is that he burns a lot of
calories with all the running he does so he needs to replace them but come on! 3 servings of curry!

Snapshot_15Drool

They sure do look good!

So once they start eating, Aoi notices that Naoto has sliced pickled vegetables on the side instead of leeks like the rest of them. Naoto comments that he doesn’t like leeks so Mari switched them out for something he’d like.

Snapshot_17

Yep she does and she’s in the lead without even knowing. That’s the best type of lead!

So next we go over to the gun range and of course this is the part that Aoi excels at.

Snapshot_18

Now look at her sheet. There’s all head shots! That’s inherently wrong for any type of law enforcement. You’re only supposed to kill the criminal when they’re threating the public safety. The proper way to deal with a criminal is something in the chest or in the arm.

Snapshot_20

This guy can’t hit the broad side of a barn with a gun…

Snapshot_21

If that’s what it was truly frightening but since it isn’t he sucks at shooting.

So Narita calls over our trigger happy attractive redhead Aoi to help Naoto out. While she helps him, she talks about how they’ll be in the public safety crew together for a long time. Naoto starts to say something but then Aoi does this.

Snapshot_22

Now that was strangely sexy. Now why can she be completely at ease and even possibly score some points at a gun range but put her at a lunch table and she’s screwed. I think there’s a Rail Wars Speculation that must be done on Aoi Sakurai! Expect it before the anime ends!

Anyway we flash over to the end of the day the group’s getting to the bath. Of course they’re only one bath so it’s guys first then girls.

So Iwaizumi leaves to go dinner leaving Naoto with Koumi and Aoi. Aoi says that Naoto can learn from Iwaizumi about having a lot of energy to burn and she offers to let him join her on the training tomorrow. See she’s so at ease right now.

Now here’s the part where it all goes to pieces.

Snapshot_23

Both girls get suprised and Aoi asks why did he even come to the training if he didn’t even want to be a member of the public safety crew. Naoto says the reason he came is because so he could drive the EF63 train.

Aoi gets mad because he could have just said that and told them before hand. Naoto says that he didn’t want to make her sad because she looked so happy while she was helping him.

Snapshot_24

Aoi blushes and storms off with Naoto trying to figure out what’s wrong.

We slid over to Naoto in the bath alone and says to himself it isn’t so bad that he wants to be a driver. He has a flashback to when he was a kid, taking pictures of trains in a blizzard in what looks like a mountain. He falls down and collapses.

We get out of the flashback and turns out Naoto fell asleep in the bath. Now I’ve watched Suzuka a few times and the number one thing you do not do is fall asleep in the bath. It makes you light headed.

Koumi pulls Naoto out of the bath but tragically she’s not naked. For someone that sleeps naked she sure isn’t proving it.

Anyway she calls out for Aoi to come and help Naoto. Naoto gets confused and thinks that Koumi is Aoi and explains the reason why he wants to become a train driver.

I’m going to get to that but first this

Snapshot_25

Drool
Great character, great body, and a nearly perfect balance on the tsundere scale. She’s like Rail Wars version of Maki Nishikino but with bigger boobs.

Moving on the reason that Naoto wants to be a driver is because he was saved by a driver that noticed him pass out in the middle of a blizzard taking pictures of trains…why were you taking pictures of trains in the middle of a blizzard? Idiot.

So after that he passes out and Koumi notices that Aoi’s left.

So the next they start off with some stretches and we see this.

It has nothing to do with the plot. I just wanted you all to see it and apparently the animators did too. We get it! They are sexy as hell! Don’t shove it down our throats.

So we go through a long explanation of how the Usui pass works…

Yawn

Then we get to the most interesting part. The train driving part!

Of course Naoto takes the driver’s seat and the head car while Aoi takes the rear one.

Oooh this one might be difficult.

So they get moving and once they start heading downhill it’s all going to hell. Aoi takes up too much speed and makes the train go insanely fast downhill.

So with the speed that Aoi’s adding on along with the speed of going downhill, it brings up a choice. Either break and crush the cars in between forcing a derailment, killing everyone on the train. Or not break and hit a train in front killing everyone on both trains…

What are you going to do Naoto?

Snapshot_28

He chose to derail their train and save the people in front. However turns out it was a similator so no one was really in danger. However the viewers didn’t know that so it looks like Aoi just almost killed them all because she was jealous and angry. Pretty bad Aoi. You lose some points with me.

So after that we go to the dining hall where Naoto is talking with Mari wondering if he’s cut out for being a part of the Public Safety crew.

Snapshot_29

Cute pose.

So they go to Mari’s room to talk while playing some Old Maid. Question? Why is Old Maid always the game they play in anime? The only time I’ve seen another card game played is in Rio:Rainbow Gate and they had an excuse of being set in a casino.

So Mari says that he looks good in his uniform all blushing and stuff.

Snapshot_30

She tells him to believe in himself and be confident in himself. Once they leave Koumi comes around and tells him that the training for tomorrow is cancelled because they aren’t ready for it yet.

So they decide to take a day off and spend it in the city of Karuizawa.

So Naoto goes back to his room and sees a note from Aoi saying that’s sorry. Then Naoto sends her a email asking does she want to go with them to the city.

Snapshot_31

So they come to the station and we get this out of Koumi.

Snapshot_32

So cute.

Of course Iwaizumi is only thinking of food and Mari asks somewhat annoyed shouldn’t Naoto being saying something about her clothes. He immediately compliments her. He’s so whipped.

So after that Naoto gets a call from Nana to pick someone up at the chapel.

Snapshot_33 Snapshot_34

So Naoto explains what’s up and Koumi offers to go with him but he says that it’s okay. While going to the chapel, he gets an email from Aoi saying that’s she’s arrived.

Once he gets to the chapel, we and our lucky protagonist gets this.

Snapshot_35 Snapshot_36

If I could drool a river I would. That’s what makes a woman! Elegance and beauty! Now I live near Chicago and when I go out for a walk or go to work, there’s not enough female elegance to fill an egg cup.

Of course things have to go wrong. They’re legally bound to.

Snapshot_37 Snapshot_38

Well ain’t this one bad situation.

Two hot girls and things are getting hairy. At least it can’t get worse…

Snapshot_39

Minori Chihara! …I mean Noa Kashima! Well yay and all bad. Now it’s three hot girls fighting over this guy. Things are about to get hairy but we’ve got to wait until the next episode.

I’m giving Rail Wars Episode 7 a 8/10. There’s some weak parts to it but hey after Episode 6 my standards were kinda low. It has an awesome ending setting up for a total harem hijinks moment.

I can’t wait to see what happens but unfortunately I have to wait so until the next episode,
Later Days.

You can ask me as many questions as you want on Ask.fm and you can follow me on Twitter to know when my new reviews are coming out. You’ll also be update on what’s happening.

Let’s Look:Rail Wars! Episode 2:And…Boom Goes The Dynamite!

We’ve got a good show here. Shipping, fighting, explosions, what’s not to love!

So we start off the episode with this.

Does everyone in this anime have huge boobs? I’m not complaining just asking…

So after a quick talk about the coicendence that they’re all on the same squad, Nana the Squad Leader makes her introduction.

Snapshot_5

I have to say that it’s very refreshing to Yui Horie’s voice not coming out of Carla from Fairy Tail. I haven’t seen much of her in anything else so it’s good for me to see her in a new role.

Also Nana makes a pun. See since they’re the Fourth Peacekeeper squad, they are called K-4 but it’s pronounced K-Yon similar to the anime to the K-On!

Snapshot_6

So after the still awesome opening by Minori Chihara(which character is she going to be?! I need to know.) we see a train called Black Star getting preped to go.

Snapshot_7

Looks like someone called in a bomb threat at the station in Yokohama and Gonou, being the commander of the Riot Police, is going there to check it out.

Note:They are currently in Tokyo which is in the Tokyo Prefecture of Japan. They’re traveling to Yokohama which is in the Kanagawa prefecture. Kanagawa is pretty much Tokyo’s neighbor and a journey between the two takes thirty minutes either way because they are in the same region of Kanto. Yes the name is the same as Pokemon I know.

So after they leave, Naoto whines about how he was supposed to be a train driver and not a peacekeeper. Quit whining man! You stopped a purse snatcher and used some pretty creative ways to catch up with them.

Snapshot_10

That’s right time to get into action.

Snapshot_12

Ooh What is it?

Snapshot_11

So your job is basically hold down the fort until Gonou stops being a sexy badass? You’ll be at that fort for awhile…

Aoi complains how can they be PSF members if they aren’t even in the action?

After that an old lady asks how to get to the platform and Aoi just points her over to the place while Naoto walks her over.

Snapshot_15 Snapshot_16

Look at you man. Being all chirvilous and what not.

After that we get a crying kid and guys try to get him to stop but of course things like this need a woman’s touch. So Koumi comforts him.

Snapshot_17

Lucky brat. Reminds me of Momonosuke of One Piece. Come on! He’s a boy. He knows what he’s doing!

So we cut to Aoi complaining to Nana that they’re basically like mall cops.

Snapshot_19

Hahaha! Good one!

Nana gets out of her seat and explains that they are protecting the people. It’s just not in a flash and obvious like Gonou does. They’re needed in a different way basically.

So to show her takes her gun in the most sexual way possible.

After that we cut to Naoto and Koumi at the lost and found with the cute pup from yesterday. Then we go to our group hanging posters but what’s weird is this.

Snapshot_24 Snapshot_25

Magic!!! Someone’s casting magic on them! Or someone wasn’t paying attention during final edits. I’ll go with the first one. Makes the anime director sound less stupid.

So anyway Nana invites the girls out to lunch while the guys keep on the job.

Snapshot_27

Wow that looks good and apparently they spray it with liquid nitrogen to make it cold and crunchy.

So after that we go back to Naoto and Iwaizumi hanging up posters. Boring right…

Snapshot_29

So other than some scorch marks and a broken locker, there wasn’t any casualities, nothing’s broken, and apparently Iwaizumi’s a freaking psychic because he was able to pull Naoto out of the way just in time.

After that we basically get a break down of what happened: the terrorist made a fake call so to pull Gonou and her team to Yokohama and get rid of the A-Team, leaving the kids to take care of it. So it worked perfect to catch them off guard.

The stationmaster states that terrorists want a 100 million yen for telling them where the bomb is. Wait a second…that’s about 986,729 dollars. It’s kinda low if you look at this way but then again a lot of yen.

Snapshot_30

Oh my god, that’s a lot of money! Imagine what I could do with that much cash…

I need to try not to think about it.

If they don’t give them the money then they’ll set off a massive explosion. Naoto immediately says they have to do evaculate the customers. One of the assistants say that since this is the Tokyo Station, and not any small little stop, it would cause a massive panic. And we all know what happens when people panic. Theft, death, trampling , and general havoc. My kind of party but it tends to be bad.

So they say that they’re going to give in to the demands but Aoi argues back.

Snapshot_31

Naoto says that if they can find the bomb before Gonou comes back or the bomb goes off they might not have to give the money away.

Snapshot_32

Nana explains how they’ll go about searching but if they can’t find the bomb by 2:50 then they’ll give into the demands.

We go to the group checking the lockers and Koumi comments that there are 3000 lockers in the station.

Snapshot_33 Snapshot_34 Snapshot_35

So after checking 368 lockers, Aoi gets an idea.

Snapshot_38 Snapshot_39

Then Koumi gets a phone call saying that the dog they turned into the lost and found last episode just started barking and won’t stop. Iwaizumi gets the idea that the bomb must be in the Lost and Found.

Aoi tells Koumi and Iwaizumi to evacuate the area and tell Nana about the bomb.

Snapshot_43

So it looks like with fifteen minutes of the clock, it looks like Gonou’s going to come back to a small crater where the lost and found was.

Snapshot_44

Can you say badass?!

Side Note: This is how you get yourself blown up when dealing with a bomb. Any smart bomb maker knows to keep the real wires that do anything out of sight and out of reach. You can’t trust the clock. The timer can speed up, show the wrong countdown time, and whole lot of other things.

Aoi says that if Naoto wants to get out he can run but he stands firm with her.

While cutting the wires, Aoi and Naoto have to line up some wires so she can cut them at the same time. So this ends up happening…

Snapshot_45

It’s not his hand but it’s just as good right? Side note: Whoever said more than hand full is a waste is deluded. Bigger is better.

So the clock hits near three and Aoi and Naoto are down to the last two wires, one pink and other red.

Snapshot_46

If that ain’t ship teasing I don’t know…that gives me an idea for another meta post. God I create more work for myself.

Aoi decides to cut the red wire but then this happens.

Snapshot_47

And the clock starts diving. Aoi dips out to go to do something and Koumi asks if she can do anything and Naoto says to help Iwaizumi.

Naoto has a vision of him driving a train in a void. Looks like he’s going to the big train yard in the sky…

Snapshot_48 Snapshot_50

And Aoi comes in and saves the day with the liquid nitrogen.

Side Note: This is actually how it works if you ever see a bomb. The liquid nitrogen freezes the electrons in the bomb and stops the electric from flowing.

Snapshot_52

So we cut to the platform with the stationmaster and then this happens…

Snapshot_55

They swarm him like they were playing Ride of the Valkyries in the background.

Snapshot_57

Such a sexy serious voice.

So after that Aoi explains how she managed to beat the bomb and then she collapses.

Snapshot_59

If this isn’t fanservice and shipping, I’m clearly blind.

After that we head back to the K-4 room where Naoto’s made Deputy Squad Leader.

Now I barely get it. Aoi did the actual save by freezing the bomb but what Naoto was more important. He made the command decision to take care of the customers and delagated responsibilies well. That’s better in a leader than Aoi’s more hotheaded style.

Snapshot_63

Indeed you are man. Indeed you are.

And with that, the episode is over. It’s definitely an okay episode but there’s a few flaws to it especially with the posters.

All in all, I’ll give this episode an 6/10. It had some good parts but it wasn’t enough to get a better score.

How Dubbing Works

Hey everyone. It’s Deven to give you the first Meta Post of its kind on this blog. Meta Posts will be stuff like how things in the anime industry work and some occasionally news about voice actors and seiyuu. Now that we’ve gotten this out of the way let’s get down to it!)

So you’re here for how Dubbing works but that’s all I’m doing here. I’m going to explain how an anime goes from the beginning from whatever medium it was first, manga, visual novel, light novel, normal novel, to subbed anime, to dubbed and playing on your TV or computer.

1.Popularity

So first step. Actually choosing which anime get adapted. How this happens is the same way a lot of things happen in business of selling anything:what’s the most popular. Japanese, American, British, it doesn’t matter what your nationality is. If you’re a business type you know that it’s easier to sell food to a starving man than to a full one.

What I mean is that no matter how small the anime it has a fanbase that loves it. Those are your guaranteed viewers and anyone else is just golden. But that’s not the most important. Not all fanbases are equal. No one’s jumping over themselves to give Sekirei another season but they renew Naruto every season.

Getting an anime depends on popularity like I said but there’s different types of popularity and different ways to get it. For example you can have your manga in a big time magazine like Shonen Jump or Weekly Shonen like Rumiko Takanhashi.

Rumiko_Takahashi_Family_by_closencounters

This lady is a badass in the manga world and one of the biggest women in the anime world and she’s not even a seiyuu. She is one of the biggest female mangaka and one of the few mangaka period that has had the majority of her works adapted into anime. Now that’s a badass woman and she doesn’t stop! She’s still writing. Most of her work appears in Weekly Shonen.

Other popularities are having an interesting premise like Attack on Titan which is one of the biggest hits that it made the artist rethink the ending. Also it’s the most popular manga in Japan beating One Piece out of the top spot. Others are popular like Date A Live by selling visual novel video games and getting high sells in the Light Novel world.

Finally some get into the anime world just through a businessman wanting to expand an empire. The best example I can think of right now is Love Live School Idol Project.

51869051

Love Live was originally just a music group that used both animated characters and real voice actresses. Then someone I assume got the freaking genius idea to make an anime and the entire franchanise exploded out. Now Love Live is even more popular that it was before with two anime season now finished, multiple CDs out, an app out on Android and IOS, and a movie coming out soon. Life is good if you’re at Lantis!

Of course you can just have an mangaka praying to whichever god they signed up for hoping that some anime studio will call and say they want to turn their manga into an anime. Not the most sexy way to get it but I guarantee you it’s probably happened

The point is there are many ways to get the popularity to get an anime. Now on to the next step.

2.Recording and getting the word out.

Now Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is anime. You got to pick your cast for the sub right. Now as sad as it is you’ve got to go to your typecast seiyuu sometimes…okay a lot of time. Why? Because you know they can do the work. Kikuko Inoue for example is known for playing hot moms for example so you’d cast her for your cute youthful mom. However you can also play around like for example Sayaka Oohara. She can play similar roles to Kikuko Inoue but she’s also got that cool and firm Erza Scarlett voice as well as whole lot of others.

The point is the cast is needs to be All-Stars. Why? Because dedicated fans will watch an anime just because one of their favorite actors is it. One of the big reasons for me why I watched OniAi, other than a bet, was that Minori Chihara and Eri Kitamura were in it. You need that draw.

The other part is simple. Get the word out! No one watch an anime that they don’t know is coming out.

3.Send In The Dub Companies.

So now your anime is done, all recorded, which season it’s coming on is done, and your hype is firm. Now what’s next? The Dub companies!

Why? So who can get the streaming rights. See back in the day when I was a kid. You had to wait until the anime was over and the Dubbers already finished the dub to see it in Japanese. Nowadays you can get it a few hours after it comes out in Japan. How cool is that!

Now why are the streaming rights so important? It’s because they go hand and hand with the home video rights ie. the right to dub it.

Now if it’s something low level, it’s not something the companies are fighting over. Now something serious and really popular like Attack on Titan…now I guess there were some boardroom brawls for Funanimation to get that.

The biggest rights fight I guess that’s happened recently would have to be the dub rights to the new Sailor Moon series as well as the rights to redub the old one.

Sailor-Moon-2 wpid-sailor-moon-crystal-trailer-2014

Now if you weren’t born in the 90s Sailor Moon was the stuff. It was the anime that made the Magical Girl saving the world top class. So it had a lot of nostalgia on it. Meaning that a lot of dub studios wanted it.

Personally I wanted Funanimation to have it because a lot of Funanimation voice actresses, particularly the one below, have said they wanted to voice act in it.

Tia_Ballard_5

Unfortunatly the rights now belong to Viz but there’s a bit of hope since they have Cherami Leigh voicing Sailor Venus. Personally I can’t wait for that to come out.

4.During the Anime

Now that the anime’s got its streaming rights sold and everything all nice and tidy on the hype train, the anime comes out.

Now this is the most important part, how the fans receive it. How the fans receive could determine a few things. One and the most important one, if it gets a second season which is always important.

Two for the dub companies, it will determine how fast they’ll dub it. Now as an anime lover, I’ve watched a few con panels on Youtube and I’ve heard a few Funanimation voice actors and actresses say that it depends on the fans. If you’re watching an anime a lot while it’s streaming it’s a sign to them that you want that dub soon.

So if you want an anime dubbed fast, watch the freaking stream!

5. After the anime is over

So the anime’s season run is over and the hype train’s slowed down but not outright stopped yet. There’s still work to be done. What? Now you’ve got to get those DVDs and Blu-Rays ready for release. Now you’ve got to combine this with step 4. If the studios see that a lot of people are buying and watching they’ll make more seasons. It’s a fact. They want to make money.

Now I’m an author(granted haven’t finished any books yet but I’m getting there). Now I talked to one of my cousin’s and shared the first few chapters of my book with him. He said it was awesome and he couldn’t wait to read the rest. I asked him how many copies would he buy. He said he wanted me to give him the ‘hookup’. Translation:he wanted me to give him a free copy.

No way in hell! I know how my family and people like them work. You buy one copy and share it with everyone and their mother. They all like the book but only one was freaking sold. So I don’t get to keep my book deal. Then you come to me saying why ain’t you writing anymore books.

Because jackass you didn’t buy any books! You shared like an idiot. It’s the same principle with anime. Now being an anime blogger I have to get the anime as fast as possible. So that means that I have to illegally download it. However I try to do that as little as possible and only for things I need to watch. Why? Because if it’s anime that I want dubbed, cutting into the company’s profit isn’t going to help it go faster.

Now I’m not saying anyone’s bad but come on. Buy the official release when it comes out. It’s just better for everyone.

5.Dubbing

So now that you’ve released your anime on DVD and Blu-Ray, it’s time for the final part, dubbing.

Now contrary to popular belief, dubbing is hard. Unlike in the original Japanese, where you say the words and then the animation is made. In dubbing you have to match the lip flaps that the character is making and it’s harder than it sounds.

For example a new Ace on Funanimation’s lineup, Bryn Aprill who currently is the English voice for Kotori Itsuka in Date A Live and Meldy in Fairy Tail. Now she started off in small parts in various anime. Why? So you can master the art of the flaps. It’s one of the main reasons why Funanimation uses a lot of their actors and actresses a lot(other than the fact that most of them live in the area).

But before you get to that you’ve got the biggest job in the anime industry on the English Dub side:Adapting the Japanese script to English.

Now a lot of people whine about how stuff is different when you adapt to English. Hmm…duh!

Japanese culture is far different than ours and some things just don’t translate.

For example in Sekirei Pure Engagement Episode 3, in the original Japanese Kazehana says that Minato is the new love in her life now. However she uses the word Koi which can mean fish. So you get a thought balloon of a fish next to his head.

Now this is word play humor. Japanese speech is full of it and most of it doesn’t translate. So instead of saying something that wouldn’t make sense to American viewers Kazehana says that Minato’s the new big fish in her life now.

It’s still roughly got the same meaning and it works in the scene.

It’s a tough thing and I say awesome to all the script adaptors.

5.1 Getting The Voice Actors.

Now this is the most difficult part of the process and the part that a lot of sub purists hate the most. However there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you don’t know about.

First of all when the anime is getting ready to be dubbed the director will look over the script and either have a open casting call or just choose someone. Typically it’s a casting call with auditions.

Now before this part even happens the director has to decide on the interpretation they want to bring to the anime and based on that they choose the actors. Now with some anime you can be looser with interpretation like with something like Panty and Stocking. I like to say that was a bit loose. Others that are big timers like One Piece don’t really have much leeway on interpretation.

And interpretation, like I said before, can determine which actors get which parts. I don’t like to use this example but I’ll do it.

For example in the Funanimation Dub of Date A Live Alexis Tipton was cast as Kurumi Tokisaki. Now some people(ie me) thought that she could have done better as Kotori. I think that Colleen Clinkenbeard or Stephanie Young could have done a good Kurumi. However as I watched it for a second time, I realized that it seemed like a different interpretation of Kurumi. Less super sexy seductress with a lust for murder and more teenage girl that likes being sexy and killing. Sounds the same completely different things. If you look at it like that then Alexis Tipton did an awesome job as Kurumi.

So now you’ve got your voice actors on the English side, you record, making sure that you match those flaps, and then you’ve got your finished product on the dub side!

Now that’s it. At the end of the process the dub and the process on either side isn’t really that different. Dub companies still have to market the dub out there just as much as the sub does.

So now that’s really it so until the Meta Post,

Let’s Look:Rail Wars! Episode 1:Hype Train Now Boarding!

Now me and my man Skycorps have been hyping this anime up. Let’s see if it’s as good as we say it is.

Note: Reviews will be coming up as soon as possible. I’m working now so I don’t have as much time as I used to but once I get my tablet I’ll be able to go faster with reviews.

So it’s time to get the hype train rolling!

We start off with our main character riding into Tokyo on what? Well it is an anime about trains. He’s got to come in on a train.

rail_wars_e1-1-400x225
After a quick explanation of how the trains work, running from Hokkaido, one of the most northern prefectures in Japan, to Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu, one of the most southern prefectures in Japan. You need to take a plane just to get there from Tokyo!

Anyway after explaining that the entire rail system is controlled by the government

I’m taking this moment to say that in real life this isn’t true. Japan’s rail system is actually privatized but of course that’s the point of this anime: What if Japan’s rail ways weren’t privatized?

So after Naoto gets off the train he sees a kid with his balloon in the tree.

Aw. That’s sad. You know what this reminds me of that Spiderman game, I think it was Spiderman 2 where you had to do those ‘save the kid’s balloon’ missions. Those sucked.

Anyway so how are you going to get the balloon back, Naoto?

Good you can be a jumping platform for a sexy redhead with big boobs. We’ll see that this is Aoi Sakurai later and she’s voiced by Manami Nukamura. She’s got a really cute voice in this anime as well as in Akuma no Riddle.

Anyway we after Aoi-chan’s daring balloon rescue we see this.

Snapshot_9
Darn it! No pansu! Anyway Aoi calls Naoto a pervert(she uses the work Chikan which is a guy or a girl mostly a guy though that gropes or flashes himself at woman on a train. I think that she should have used a different word like hentai or ecchi or something but hey that’s their choice)

Anyway then we see the opening which is a really good song by Minori Chihara, coming off her awesome role in Date A Live 2 as Miku Izayoi. The woman is an awesome singer and voice actress. She’s apparently got a role in this anime too but her character hasn’t been announced yet. So if you’re a Minori Chihara fan then you’ve got to stick around.

Snapshot_10
Haha that kept me laughing through the opening. Let’s keep going.

Snapshot_11
So once Naoto enters the school and gets into the class we get a proper introduction of all the main cast.

Snapshot_12
She’s so cute and she’s voiced by Maaya Uchida, coming off her good role as Kaguya Yamai in Date A Live 2 as well as doing a badass job singing the Opening song to Akuma no Riddle.

Now the teacher comes in and this is where it gets a bit weird for me. Now when I first watched this I watched it after Fairy Tail Episode 13. So I’m sitting around watching and then I heard my lovely Juvia-chan’s voice!

Snapshot_14
It’s kinda weird to hear Mai Nakahara in a serious role when most of the time I see her voicing Juvia.

After introducing Captain Gonou, Naoto explains how things work at the school. They’re being trained to be a part of the public safety crew.

After that little bit of explanation Capt. Gonou says she ain’t going to baby them. After that she explains as the rail company they are charged with protecting and insuring the safety of their customers. They need to be smart and watchful. Wow she sounds serious…

I need some Juvia-chan after that!

Okay now that’s out of my system. They start the training.

Snapshot_15
Hmm…good question. It’s a problem that a lot of women on trains deal with in Japan.

However good old Naoto doesn’t have an idea what to do.

Snapshot_16
I like this girl already! Nice boobs, cute face, redhead, tsundere, voiced by Manami Numakura. Have her voiced by Pile and have her sing a few songs and she could be Maki from Love Live!

Anyway Gonou says that she agrees and wishes that it was like that but it’s not allowed. Someone’s triggerhappy and it’s not the hot lady with the blue hair.

After that we see this.

Snapshot_17
Wow she’s smart! Naoto compliments her test scores and Haruka blushes.

Snapshot_18
Oh goody! Shipping wars have already begun! I’m good with Naoto x Haruka but I’m for Naoto x Aoi. It’s always good for the main character to get with the tsundere.

Okay after that Aoi comes over and snarks Naoto about flirting with Haruka, saying that he’s always checking out her chest. You can’t really blame him.
Snapshot_19
See you can’t really blame him. Her boobs are so big they can bounce while she’s sitting down.

After that Iwaizumi asks her about a question on one of their tests.

Snapshot_20
I didn’t say anything when he was there earlier in the episode but here’s my chance. He’s voiced by Satoshi Hino and I don’t really know him from much other than Naruto as Sai. I’ve got some high hopes for him though.

After Koumi explains how she deduced the answer, everyone says that they want to study together with her!

Yeah!

After that we move to the track where I guess they’re practicing stamina and speed.

Snapshot_21

Looks like he’s tearing up the track! Looks like Aoi’s no slacker too since she’s right behind him.

Now this next one just defies logic.

Snapshot_23
Now I’m not the most well versed guy in women’s anatomy but do boobs do that?

Anyway we move on to our foursome(not in that way. I like to say that I can have a blog that kids can read) at the gun range.

Naoto can’t shoot the broad side of a barn, Iwaizumi got good form but he’s the same, Koumi got knocked her onto her very nice rear by the recoil. Can’t anyone shoot in this anime?

Now that’s sexy! Add gun slinger to that list!

After that we go to through a explantion of Naoto saying that the final test is coming.

Snapshot_27
Looks like the objective is to get up to 100 km/h on a coal train which of course since I’m an American means nothing to me. Wait a second.

Oh it means 62 miles per hour rounded down. Oh everyone in the world why can’t you use empirical measures instead of the metric system.

So the teams are Naoto and Iwaizumi and the other Aoi and Koumi.

Snapshot_28 Snapshot_30
Sounds kinda bad, don’t you think. It should be more even by having a girl and boy team. The girls might get outpaced by the boys.

Not saying anything bad about women or anything. Normally I wouldn’t comment on it but there’s a lot of internet personalities that people bitch at for not being political correct and sensitive to people. I don’t want to be one of them. Personally I think it’s a load of crap. I didn’t start this blog to be snarked at that I’m not appealing to everyone. I started this blog to talk anime with people like me…

Wow that’s off track. Back to the show.

So after a explanation again by Naoto about a coal train can get up to 100 km/h, we find out that they aren’t getting anymore speed after they got up to 80 km/h. Turns out it’s combustion efficency. They’ve got to spread out the coal to all sides of the burner instead of just in the middle.

So after changing it up and throwing it to both sides, they manage to get up to 100km/h. So after that Gonou says that they pass and they were actually the only group to get up to the required speed. Good job!

So they go to the Tokyo Station for the final training where they get this old dude that whines about they need to do what he says or he’ll have to send reports up to the main office. Fool! This is a shonen-esque anime born from a shonen-esque light novel. Protagonists don’t listen to the rules!!!

So after that the old dude says that someone’s been hearing a dog in one of the trains and Naoto and Koumi volunteer to go.

Snapshot_31
Nice looking train.
Snapshot_34Naoto asks why Koumi decided to join the National Rail Ways but then they hear the dog. Looks like it’s in the ceiling. That means someone’s got to go and look.

Snapshot_33
Looks like someone’s going to get a look at some panties. Oh Naoto. You and your perverted ways.

Anyway Koumi says that her reason for joining up is because someone that she admired was a part of it. Now if you’re just looking at the subs that’s all you get. However if you’ve been studying Japanese like I do you’ll see that she uses the word Akogare which is one thing. One a word they mostly used in love stories so it’s not someone she’s just looked up to and respected .

So Koumi likes someone…that’s nice but look at this.

Snapshot_35
I’m not a pervert…

Anyway Naoto explains that his case is similar and Koumi gets surprised and falls off the ladder. Now this is shonen so there’s only a few ways she can fall on him.

Snapshot_36 Snapshot_37

Hmm they chose one of the classics. Always a good choice.

Anyway Koumi thanks Naoto and says that he saved her again.

They find the dog and bring it to the lost and found.

Snapshot_38
Aw he’s so cute!

After that all that needs to be done is the paperwork. So how much is a dog worth?

Snapshot_39
Apparently one hot girl with big boobs.

So after that Aoi and Iwaizumi come in and catch up with them as Naoto and Koumi come out.

Then some purse snatchers come and steal this lady’s purse and our group gives chase.

Wow it looks really interesting.

Snapshot_47

Looks like they’re going to get away since the next train heading to that stop leaves Tokyo at 1:20 so they’d never make it in time.

Snapshot_48
So Naoto, Aoi, Koumi, and Iwaizumi jump onto Doctor Yellow and manage to beat them there! Now that’s a fast train.

Yeah bro that ain’t going to work…

This is what you need to do!

Snapshot_59 Snapshot_63
Now that’s some good action.

Don’t worry Koumi-chan helped too.

Snapshot_65
Looks like she’ll really need to use that medical kit now.

So after that they return to the old dude’s office where he chews them out for going off the reservation. He’s going to report them…looks like their futures on the trains is over…

Snapshot_66
Looks like they still got on the team!

Snapshot_67
And with that the episode ends.

Now some thoughts about the ending done by ZAQ. I’m guessing she learned English or is from somewhere that speaks English because her spoken English is really good during the song. Most of the time when Japanese people say English words they use the Katakana way of saying it. This sounds like she was actually using English.

Anyway that’s it for the episode. I think starting this review I’ll take a leaf out of my friend Skycorps book and give each episode a score out of ten. So the first episode of Rail Wars in my opinion gets 7/10.

We had good characters, some not over the top fanservice, a badass in Aoi Sakurai, and the premise of the anime was explained well.

However there were some faults. Those Ear protector headphones disappearing and reappearing is definitely one of them. Check it out during that scene if you don’t believe me.

So that’s it for this review. Until the next review,
